11 Tools

For your final 11 Tools post, answer these questions:

1. What are your favorite tools you now have in your personal technology toolbox? Briefly describe a particular activity that you will plan for your students using at least one of these new tools.

My favorite tools are the google docs, wordle, and animoto.  I will use these to help students better understand concepts and communicate better with my team members.  The google docs will be big in the communication part.

2. How have you transfomed your thinking about the learning that will take place in your classroom?
My thinking was that these things are hard to do and apply to the classroom but they are easy and don't take much time.  They will improve the understanding of my students.

3. Were there any unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
How easy it is to apply these new tools.

Tool #11

In YOUR blog post, discuss at least three things you would want to make sure your students understand about being good digital citizens. Explain briefly how you would "teach" the idea of digital citizenship to your students.

1. Information responsibility- Everything that you put on the internet should be backed up with facts.  Take credit for your ideas and opinions and give credit to others.

2. Digital Security (self-protection): electronic precautions to guarantee safety. Sudents should not put all of their information on the net.  Also students should be able to recognize sites that keep their info secure. I would explain this by saying that you use locks to secure things of value or don't tell others you don't know your name. I t's the same with the net and websites.

6. Digital Law: electronic responsibility for actions and deeds.  I feel that this is important because we don't want students to be destructive with computers.  I would explain to students that just as destroying others property physically is wrong, destroy someone's website or computer digitally is just the same.

Tool #10

Goole maps is a great way for students to explore other places around the world.  Google maps is easy to use.  I have it on my iPhone. Great for seeing places that are in line with social studies lessons or geography.

Hangman is a fun vocabulary game for students.  This game can excite students into learning more words sor that that can a better chance of beating the game.  The more words you know, the better chance you have at winning.

Tool #9

For your Tool #9 Assignment:

1. Discuss how the screencast could help your students and how you might have students use Jing.
Jing is really helpful in showing students how to navigate around the computer.  It's very hard to walk around and make sure all students are clicking the the right things or repeating the directions over and over.  Video directions can take care of the students that just need some help and the teacher can help those who may not be that computer savvy.

2. Discuss how you might use Skype with your students and share across the district, the state, the nation, or the world!
Skype can be used to connect with other Health Fitness classes in the district. Classes can share with others what they are doing or even have a question and answer session with others live.

Tool #8

Sports Science
I linked this video so that students can see the science behind athletics.

Tennis at it's best!
I linked this video so students can see the best in the world model what great tennis looks like.

Tool #7

Students could use digital storytelling to help students better understand subjects such as history or a concept such as cooperation. Letting students be a part of a storytelling process can promote better understanding of what is being taught.  Teachers can use these digital stories to check for understanding.

Tool #6

IN YOUR BLOG post, discuss how students might use wikis to aid in their learning. Did any of the sample wikis you viewed give you any particular ideas for using a wiki in your classroom for students. How about for and your team or department?

Wikis are a great way for people to contribute and organize projects and ideas. One sample wiki I saw gave me an idea about eating healthy foods. Students can wiki everytime they eat healthy foods that were discussed in class. Others can add and see that they are not the only ones eating healthy. It could inspire who usually don't eat healthy to do so and list other options so that your not eating the same things.
Wikis are a great way for theams to organize projects and spend less time in meetings.

Tool #5

I decided to use Delicious as my social bookmarking site. I was asking myself "What is the difference between this and just typing what you want onto Google?" Well I see that these bookmarked sites are from millions that you would have to search anyway. What I mean is that others narrow it down for you. You still may think that the sites are not what you like but it's better doing all the work yourself. The tags that I used were just words that I can relate to the site. Others my not think the same way as me but I like bookmarking for myself more than for others. If I want someone to look at a site I could tell them what the tag is for the site.
In the classroom, this is a great way to organize and share sites with all of your students for things like review or if the need help with work. If the teacher or students find a site they just social bookmark it and now everyone has it. Makes the kids feel that they are adding to their friends' and own education.

Tool #4

Google reader is a great way to stay connected to your favorite websites without having to go all over the web. For the classroom, it's easy to go to resource websites and be one of the firsts to get new information. With subscribing to blogs, you can see what's going on quickly and add when new stories or news comes up. You don't have to waste time checking all the sites and see the same stuff.

Google docs is great in that everyone can be apart of the process in creating something and have their input without all the paper. In the classroom this can be used in taking surveys and getting input on past lessons.

Tool #3

Here is what I did on Wordle:
Wordle: Locomotor movements
I would use the Wordle with vocabulary words. I know the students will remember them more easily when it's fun.The could also help the teacher create a word wall right there in the classroom.
Here's what I did on Animoto:

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

I would use the Animoto to keep track of big events and to show others what is going on at the school.

Tool #2 PLN

1. What are your thoughts about building an online education community and participating in a PLN?

Participating in a PLN is a great way to expand a teacher's learning and skills.  As a health fitness teacher, most of my learning or ideas come from conventions or meetings were we physically gather at a place.  I never really thought that we could just share and learn through a blog or PLN.  Also we can keep these ideas on our computers and don't have to try to remember how an activity is done. we can assess it anytime and even share with others how it went and how we may have changed it for our class.

 2. What point stood out to you from the commenting advice?

The one part that did stand out to me was to be humble and gracious.  Blogs are there to open disscusion and seek ideas, not to let everyone know how smart you think you are on a subject.  Also it;s important to ask questions as a way to get the dicussion going and as a way to invite people to comment.

Tool #1 of the 11 Tools for the 21st Century Learner

Dear readers,
I've always heard of blogging but never thought I would be doing one! My perception of it was that it would be hard to set up.  I found it to be very easy but a little time consuming at first.  It was time consuming because you really get into making the blog and Voki your own.  Now the hard part is coming up with things that people would like to read about and discuss.  Hopefully I won't bore anyone.
Thanks,
Coach C
